The next generation of the full-size pickup truck is on the radar for a quite long time and we are constantly getting new reports that suggest all kinds of novelties for the new model. At this point, there are already some things that seem pretty certain, despite that the latest reports suggest the new model won’t hit the market before the last quarter of 2021. Allegedly, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is about to come with a full load of improvements and one of the first things that come is electrification.
The next-generation model is about to come with a hybrid setup, but that won’t be the only major novelty of this redesign. We are also about to see a completely new platform, which will bring some pretty interesting, advanced design solutions. Of course, new aesthetics and interior design are a certain thing, while the latest reports also suggest a completely new gasoline engine.

2022 Toyota Tundra Redesign
The 2022 Toyota Tundra redesign will bring all kinds of novelties and the first thing that comes to our minds is the platform. At this point, it is pretty clear that the company has developed a completely new platform, a BoF version of the TNGA architecture. Some call it TNGA-F, while others suggest it has been codenamed F1. In any case, it will bring significant improvements in various aspects.
One of the first things that come to our minds is weight reduction. The new model is expected to be notably lighter, thanks to the use of lightweight materials. Of course, this will have a significant impact on fuel economy, which has been one of the most critical points of the current generation.
The new platform should also significantly improve the ride quality and when it comes to the ride quality, one of the first things that come to mind suspension. This is where we expect big changes, as the 2022 Toyota Tundra is about to finally drop ancient leaf springs and come with something more refined. Some insiders suggest that lower trims will feature typical coil springs, while hi-end models will probably come with air suspension.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid
There is no doubt that the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid is the most anticipated thing about the next-generation model and that’s for a reason. Simply, all reports suggest impressive mpg ratings and if we consider that the current generation is extremely thirsty, this is something that would launch the new model to the starts.
At this point, we know that the new powertrain will be heavily based on the system that powers Lexus LS 500h. This means a V6-based system, which would come with a significant power boost in this case. The first rumors suggest a max output of 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, roughly. Along with the new hybrid system, we also count on a new 10-speed automatic gearbox.
When it comes to 2022 Toyota Tundra mpg ratings, we presume that the new version would be able to return more than 30 miles per gallon, which would be something unseen in the truck world so far.
V8 Engine Stays In The Offer?
Despite that the new hybrid version is currently in the spotlight, the latest actions of the Japanese manufacturer clearly indicate that the next-generation model will keep the gasoline version as well. Toyota filed a trademark application for the “I-Force Max” name, which clearly says that a new gasoline version is on the way. However, it is still unclear whether this will be an updated version of the current 5.7-V8 or a completely new unit. In any case, we are pretty sure if will feature eight cylinders and significantly improved fuel efficiency. A little bit higher output is also expected.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra Diesel has been rumored as well, though we don’t believe in such scenario,
Styling and Interior Design
These things are an integral part of every redesign and thins that definitely have a huge impact on a buyer that chooses between different models, even though we are talking about pickup trucks. Therefore, we have no doubt that completely new aesthetics will be part of this overhaul as well. Is there a chance to see something like 2022 Toyota Tundra concept or prototype before the launch, it is hard to say at this point.
In any case, we don’t expect to see any radical change when it comes to the exterior look. We expect evolution of the current design language, with a pretty conventional approach. Still, some reports suggest the new model could take a lot of inspiration from the existing lineup, especially when it comes to headlights and grille design.

When it comes to interior design, the current model looks pretty outdated. So, there is no doubt that the new generation will bring significant improvements, which would include finer materials, a more attractive dashboard and loads of new tech features. On the other side, we don’t expect bigger changes in terms of cab dimensions, though it’s possible to see a single cab version in the offer once again.
Stay tuned for more 2022 Toyota Tundra rumors.
