These days, we can find a lot of reports about the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and many of them suggest significant changes. Things are pretty simple here, as the recent update was pretty mild. It hasn’t brought any particular visual or mechanical changes and the focus was rather on things like new interior features. That’s the reason why many believe that the complete redesign is around the corner.
According to them, a complete overhaul should happen already in the next year and it should bring all kinds of novelties, starting from a new styling, new platform, design solutions etc. Still, the thing that attracts the most attention is the powertrain, as all kinds of stories can be heard about the new engine options. Of course, this includes a new hybrid powertrain, but we can also hear stories about the diesel version. In any case, it looks like the new model might arrive already in a year or two.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign
When it comes to the 2022 Toyota Tacoma redesign, there is a lot of interesting things that may happen. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the platform. The new Tacoma is expected to share the platform with the upcoming Tundra. Therefore, we are talking about the new F1 architecture, which should bring a lot of improvements compared to the outgoing model. For example, the new Tacoma should be notably lighter, which the chassis should be significantly stiffer. In practice, this means improvements in terms of efficiency, as well as of the max towing capacity, which should be significantly improved.
Despite the model’s popularity and the fact that we are actually talking about a pretty amazing truck, there are some things that definitely need to be changed and improved. This particularly refers to the rear axle, where the current model still features pretty archaic leaf springs and drum brakes. We expected this will be changed, so the future Toyota Tacoma redesign should bring notable improvements in terms of comfort. Along with the strengthened chassis, the new suspension should also bring notable improvements in terms of the max towing capacity, considering that the current model isn’t particularly impressive in this aspect.
Of course, the upcoming redesign will bring new aesthetics as well. It’s hard to talk about the exact styling at the moment, but we may presume that Toyota won’t experiment too much and that we won’t see any radical change in terms of the styling. After all, the current model looks pretty good.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid
There is no doubt that the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is one of the most anticipated things about the upcoming redesign. At this point, we don’t know the exact details, so there are different predictions about the powertrain. According to many of them, the new system would be based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, with the design that has a lot in common with the new Highlander Hybrid. This promises superior mpg ratings, which would probably go over 30 mpg combined, which would be unparalleled ratings in the class, by a large margin. However, most truck drivers would like to see a significant power boost, as 240 horsepower definitely isn’t enough to provide respectable towing ratings.
The new 2022 Toyota Tacoma definitely needs more than 7.500 pounds of max towing ratings and that’s the reason why many believe the new hybrid will feature a V6-based powertrain. Some even suggest the same system that can be found in Lexus LS 500h, which delivers around 350 horsepower, which seems like a perfect measure for a pickup truck like this.
Other Engine Options
Another engine option that has been in conversation for a while is a diesel engine. Things are pretty clear here, considering that Toyota doesn’t have too many diesel options to offer. Practically, the only reasonable choice would be a 2.8-liter turbodiesel from Hilux, which is capable of towing more than 7.700 pounds. Furthermore, we might see a slight power boost, so the 2022 Toyota Tacoma diesel could feature more than 177 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque.
On the other side, the current V6 will probably remain and it should be the base engine option. It currently delivers slightly under 280 horsepower, but we won’t be surprised if we see a slight power boost. Some reports even suggest a turbocharged version, though four powertrain options seem like too much for a mid-size pickup truck.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Interior
One of the things that bother the current model is cabin size. The current interior is a little bit tight, so it’s no wonder that most reports suggest that the new Tacoma will be bigger. The trend of oversizing mid-size trucks is present for several years, but we don’t expect such thing from the future Toyota Tacoma redesign. The new model might get a couple of inches in wheelbase, but just in order to provide a little bit more space on the inside. Of course, we also count on a completely new interior layout, which would include new aesthetics, new materials, more tech goodies etc.
