2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign: What To Expect

The recent update of the most popular pickup truck in North America has brought a fine number of novelties. There are new technologies, new standard features, as well as a couple of mechanical tweaks on certain versions. However, most truck enthusiasts, especially Tacoma fans expected a little bit more. As you probably read in so many places, there were all kinds of stories about new powertrain options, but nothing happened eventually. Also, we didn’t see any particular styling change, except slight revisions on the grille. To many experts, this clearly indicates that the Japanese manufacturer could redesign this truck in the near future. Moreover, some experts look at the 2022 Toyota Tacoma redesign as a quite possible thing. At this point, it’s just a rumor, so take the following paragraphs with a reserve.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Rumors

Rumors about the  2022 Toyota Tacoma redesign appeared right after the 2020 update. Simply, this refresh was pretty mild and we could say that many Toyota fans felt disappointed. We haven’t seen any styling change, nor new powertrain options.

In the eyes of many Toyota enthusiasts, this looks like an overture to a complete redesign in the near future. There are many reasons why lovers of this truck believe in such a scenario. For example, the new Tundra is about to come soon and the interesting thing about it is that we will see a completely new, F1 platform that will be highly modular. It will be used for the next-generation Tacoma as well. This means that Toyota engineers will get on the new Tacoma right after they’re done with the full-size truck. The fact that the two models will ride on the same platform should shorten the development time significantly.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Expectations

Expectations from the 2022 Toyota Tacoma are pretty big. Despite that Tacoma is already by far the most popular mid-size truck in North America, it definitely needs improvements. On one side, the recent update has brought some nice tech goodies, which will definitely carry on in the new model. On the other side, we count on various improvements in terms of the chassis and overall design. The stronger frame is one of the things that come to mind, as we count on notably higher max towing capacity in the new model. Also, the ride quality should be improved, while weight reduction seems like a certain thing.

Styling and Interior Design

Of course, these are the aspects that should bring big novelties as well. Of course, the styling is one of the first things that come to mind with every redesign and the 2022 Toyota Tacoma won’t be an exception. We count on a completely new design language, though we doubt that the Japanese manufacturer will experiment with some radical aesthetical changes. The new Tacoma will rather keep a conventional look, with evolutionary changes only.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Interior

On the other side, we count on significant improvements on the inside. This particularly refers to the interior space, which definitely isn’t the strongest point of the current generation. Also, we count on further improvements in terms of the interior quality, as the new cabin should come with more style, finer materials etc. Finally, count on interesting novelties in terms of tech features.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign and Engine Options

This is probably the most interesting part of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma redesign. We expect that the new model will bring a lot of novelties in this aspect, especially when it comes to electrification. A hybrid powertrain seems like a certain thing, according to most reports. However, it’s still unclear what kind of powertrain we are about to see. Some sources suggest an efficient four-cylinder-based system, similar to ones we’ve seen in the new Highlander. On the other side, some sources suggest that the new Tacoma needs to be highly capable in terms of towing and hauling, so a V6-based hybrid system seems more likely to them. In any case, something interesting is cooking in Toyota’s kitchen.

On the other side, the current gasoline engine options will probably remain in the offer. Both engines are quite thirsty, while the base four-engine also lacks power, so we definitely expect to see some improvements, both in terms of power and efficiency. Some reports also suggest a diesel version of the new Tacoma, but we that doesn’t look very likely in our eyes, despite that most rivals have or will have such versions in the offer.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Schedule

According to some sources, the complete overhaul will happen in less than two years, probably in late 2021. Still, keep in mind that these are just rumors and that we are still waiting to hear something from the officials. When it comes to the competition, things will remain pretty much the same. There are models like Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier etc.

  2. My 1st new Tacoma was a 2013′, SR5 extended cab, 6′ bed, 4.0 V6, 4X4, 5-speed automatic. It was the best truck out of all the ones I’ve ever owned. With only 33,000 miles, I traded it for a new 2020′, TRD Sport, 4 door crew cab, 3.5 V6 engine, 6-speed automatic, 5′ bed, because of all the new safety features. That was a “Big Mistake”, the 3.5 V6 does NOT have near the torque or HP the 4.0 2013′ V6 had.
The 3.5 V6 constantly downshifts going up just a slight hill because it is so weak. The interior is smaller in the front and rear area and the 5′ bed does not have as much hauling room or storage compartments. Toyota, please put the 4.0 V6 back in, or Turbocharge the 3.5 V6, and continue the 6-speed transmission.
In 2022′, I had planned to trade for another new Tacoma IF they increased the engine power, and etc, but since they don’t, I’ll be trading for a new Ford Tremor, Chevy, or Dodge, or etc.
