In the past several months, we have received lots of reports about the next-generation Tundra. The new version of the popular pickup truck in on the way and if we consider who long the current model has been around, it’s no wonder that the new model is about to bring tons of novelties. Of course, many of them refer to the powertrain and while everyone talks about the new hybrid powertrain, the Japanese manufacturer has applied for the “I-Force Max” trademark, which clearly indicates that the company is also working on a new gasoline-only version. At this point, details about the 2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max are a complete mystery but may presume the new version will stick to eight cylinders.
The main reason for such expectation lays in the fact that Toyota’s V8 engines have been praised for unparalleled reliability and durability in the truck world. Also, keep in mind that such a version would be more affordable compared to the expected Hybrid model, which would definitely attract many drivers.

2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max – Brief History
The history of I-Force engines starts in the early 2000s, along with the original Tundra. At the time, the company needed a large and powerful engine for Tundra and other full-size models, in order to compete with North American rivals. The original engine features 4.7 liters in displacement. With the arrival of the second-generation, the engine has become bigger and more powerful. Of course, we are talking about the current 5.7-liter unit, which is good for 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque.
Despite all the great things about this engine, years are passing and it became outdated, particularly in terms of fuel efficiency. These days, this is the thirstiest engine in the class, and Toyota definitely needs something lest thirsty. That’s the main improvement we expect to see from the 2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max. The higher output would also be something nice to see.

2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max – What to Expect?
With the addition of “Max” in its name, we presume that the company wants to maximize the performances of the new engine. Therefore, we count on improvements, both in terms of power and economy. Some sources suggest this might be the name of a new hybrid system. Still, keep in mind that the new Tundra will use an upgraded hybrid version of the already-existing system that powers Lexus models. Also, we would probably see some other word instead of “Max” in its name, something that clearly indicates it’s about an electrified powertrain.
Therefore, we expect that the 2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max will be a gasoline-only version, equipped with a new gasoline engine. At this point, it’s hard to say whether is this going to be a completely new design or a new version of the existing I-Force engine. In both cases, we would probably see changes in displacement, as well as a little bit more power.
In both cases, we expect that Toyota will focus on efficiency. So, the main goal will be to offer a truck we decent mpg ratings. The current version is extremely thirsty and returns only about 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
While the new Hybrid version is expected to deliver some impressive, unparalleled numbers for a pickup truck, which would go over 30 mpg, the 2021 Toyota Tundra I-Force Max would rather feature class-average fuel economy, something on par with V8 rivals. Combined with Toyota’s reputation for reliability and durability, this should be a combination that can ensure great sales numbers, maybe even better compared to a more expensive Hybrid model.
Tundra Redesign Expectations
Besides completely new powertrain options in the offer, we count on all other kinds of novelties for the next-generation Tundra. The testing model has already been spotted a couple of times and we can clearly see some of the novelties. Of course, the most notable is a new rear suspension design. Toyota is finally dropping leaf springs and instead, we will probably see air suspension. However, some sources suggest lower trims could come with more conventional coil springs. In any case, this is something that will significantly improve the ride quality.

Of course, the new generation will come with a new platform, codenamed F1. The new architecture will bring benefits in various aspects, starting from weight reduction, ride quality, comfort, towing capacity etc. On the other side, dimensions are expected to remain pretty similar. Styling-wise, we count on evolutionary changes. When it comes to interior design, we count on a completely new cabin design, with significantly improved quality, aesthetics and comfort. Naturally, the new model will also come with loads of new tech goodies. This would include a completely new infotainment system, as well as all kinds of advanced driver-assistance features.
